India’s wheat procurement during the Rabi marketing season of 2011-12 has reached to 244 lakh tonne so far, said country’s agriculture ministry. In an official release the ministry said this was 19 lakh tons more than last year’s wheat procurement of 225 lakh tonne. Total procurement is 2,44, 43,301 tonne till May 20.

Punjab has led the States by making record procurement of 108,47,828 tonne wheat followed by Haryana with 67,84,124 tonne. Madhya Pradesh have also surpassed the previous marks by procuring 40,04,477 tonne wheat. This year Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have also made significant procurement by purchasing 17, 04,338 tonne and 9,49,065 tonne respectively

Rice procurement in the Kharif Marketing season 2010-11 has also crossed the last year mark on the day. As on 20.5.2011, the procurement is 280,80,570 tonne while procurement last year on the day was 278,68,159 tonnes.

With so much increase in staple crop production and inability to handle them, one wonders whats keeping the government from opening these items for export.
