Local prices of spices (especially chilli and turmeric) in India are heating up. The price rise is not due to heavy demand from overseas markets. In fact the local markets in countries like Bangladesh are quite silent with very few trades taking place. The rise in price is due to acute shortage of stocks of these spices in India. As the new corps are expected in March-April 2010, the rise in price is expected to continue at-least till January, wherein after if the local farmers have enough stock left over then they can release some at lower rates before the new stock arrives in March. Keeping this in mind it is advisable for the Importers to keep buying these spices at various levels through November 2010, to meet their demand. |
